How to choose social media platforms: An article roundup

social media profiles How to choose social media platforms: An article roundup

Everyone wonders what social media profiles are important to keep and which simply do not matter. With more platforms launching all of the time, it can be tough to keep up with yet another profile. So which platforms are worthwhile and which can you let fall by the wayside? Here, we share a roundup of articles on the various social media options.

Google+ Brand Pages

Should brands be bothered with creating Google+ Brand Pages? The verdict does not seem to be in just yet, but this article on Mashable discusses why companies should invest in them. The most compelling reason? Future integration with other Google products, which in turn can provide better search and brand visibility. An interesting look at the pages that have people wondering if it’s another Google product that will disappear.

An additional factor to consider is that Google  has recently announced that Google Friend Connect will soon no longer be an option for those without Blogger blogs- it will be retired on March 1. Instead, Google suggests creating a Google+ Page in order to help ease the loss. More information can be read in the article Google Closes Knol, Friend Connect and Other Services

Klout

Klout. It has become a hotly debated topic (ahem- excuse the pun) in the social media world. Is it accurate? Should I be concerned about my score? Why did they change their algorithm? Where are MY perks? With so many questions and emotional responses, many have done away with their profiles. Here, Fadra from Social Dialect discusses why she’s not deleting her Klout profile on social dialect (and links to two people who have).

Pinterest

Did you know that Pinterest has grown 2000% since June? Yes, I said two THOUSAND percent. In fact, this article discusses how Pinterest is now pulling in more pageviews than etsy. Generating more than 420 million pageviews in the month of October, this is one social network worth paying attention to- especially since investors think it’s only at the early part of its growth.

So tell us: What do you think? What social media networks are worthwhile to you and which do you leave alone? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

Blogger or WordPress?

First, let’s define WordPress. WordPress comes in two forms- the free, .com version and the self-hosted .org version. Here’s the deal; there are only so many choices we can handle before our brains explode, so I’m going to make this easy for you. If you want to stick to a free blog, where you are not paying anything, you should have a Blogger blog. WordPress.com is much more restrictive in what you are able to do behind the scenes and also does not allow ads. Monetization is a key goal for many bloggers, so if this is something you ever think you want to do, then wordpress.com is not for you. In addition, many of the fun plugins for wordpress.org are not available on the .com version.

Blogging might be just a hobby for you- and that’s fine! But, if you want to go further with it, it pays to keep in mind that with Blogger blogs, Google owns your blog. While not a terribly frequent occurrence, Google can decide they don’t like your content and delete your blog without warning (backing up is important!). For the record, I only know of one person this has ever happened to, so I’m not sure it’s that terribly common. But if you go through all this work & effort on the blog, why risk it?

If you have no intention of ever monetizing your blog and don’t want to brand yourself/blog/name, etc., then Blogger is probably the choice for you. You can still create custom looks and designs in blogger, and Blogger has offered a lot more ability to customize in recent months. You can now even create up to 10 static pages as well. You can also have some advertising on Blogger blogs, though you can run into issues.

Not everyone has problems with Blogger and have, in fact, built large and successful blogs on that platform. While people often report having some downtime with Blogger, this can always happen with any platform (though it depends on your server). You can even purchase your own domain name for the low price of $10 a year- though keep in mind that even with your own domain, Google still owns your blog.

Quick Tip Monday: Choosing a Giveaway Winner

Today’s post was inspired by a Fan question on our Facebook Fan Page. Is there something you’d like to know? Leave a comment below or post it on our Fan Page to see it answered in a blog post!

Giveaways are commonly seen on blogs, whether there are huge prizes or a small token as the prize. There are many rules, various entry requirements, and (hopefully) lots of comments from people trying to win. So, what do you do once you run a giveaway and it’s time to pick a winner?

There are several options. My preferred choice is to use the site http://www.random.org. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s free! Simply go to the site, enter the minimum and maximum values (for entries on your blog) and click Generate. You have your winning entry in seconds!

If you run your giveaways on a self-hosted WordPress site, then you have several plugin options. While these plugins will certainly do the trick, keep in mind that you always want to minimize the amount of plugins that you use. Having too many plugins installed on your blog can slow down your site’s loading time, which can be a turn off for readers. However, if you keep them to a minimum, plugins can be a handy time-saver.

One of the most popular contest plugins is called And the Winner Is…. This plugin allows you to set a post as a contest, from which the plugin will randomly choose a winner (or winners). Pick Giveaway Winner is another WordPress plugin that works similarly, and also allows you to disqualify people who try to enter more than once based on email (or can reduce the entries from multiple to only one). Each of these can be found by searching plugins from your installation or through the WordPress Plugin Directory.

Picknik

Picknik is very straightforward and easy to use. With many effects available, you can make a regular picture look a lot more interesting. For example, with this photo, it was a little blurry on the side and not the most interesting picture. But, in using the sepia effect, it enhances the emotional moment of him getting on the bus (at least to me!).
